Silk Necktie Buying Guide

Determining the Proper Length

The length of a necktie is particularly important. A tie is a proper length if the widest part hangs near the edge of the wearer's belt, with the tip extending below. People can slightly manipulate the length of the tie, depending on the knot.
Most manufacturers offer three basic lengths with their neckties so that taller and shorter wearers can enjoy a more flattering fit.

Finding the Right Width

Shoppers need to take width into consideration when buying a new tie. Over time, both thin and wide ties have been trendy. However, the standard for neckties remains the same. Most men find that a 3 1/4-inch size is ideal. If a tie does not have a taper, then it should be slightly skinnier, approximately 2 ¾ inches. Broader men often consider wider ties to maintain proper proportions. Thin-framed men can decrease the size of their tie to approximately 2 3/4 inches without the piece looking like a "skinny tie."

Tie Fabrics and Materials

Silk ties come in all different shapes, sizes, and price ranges. Some of the primary features that differentiate price are the materials and construction of the tie.

Materials

The highest quality tie makers create their products from a single, fine drape of silk. Some pieces feature synthetic fabric that may look like silk from afar. Buyers can quickly see the difference in these pieces by the sheen given off by synthetic fabrics. Real, 100% silk ties are a significant investment, so if a product claims to be silk but comes at a low price, buyers should double check the material first.
